U13-CRICKET

The U13's had a fairly good season in winning and losing one apiece. The other fixtures often ended in boring, drawn out non results. Euthiasm was the main reason why we maintained our constant pattern of good play.

The spearhead of the attack were the bowlers and in particular Christopher and Mumford, who bowled exceptionally well.

However, the fielding of the side was well under par and didn't do us - or the bowler's figures - justice.

The batting was often inconsistant and subsequently we didn't give the opposition too high a target. So we always relied on our bowlers who saved us many a game.

Overall the season wasn't too bad - but if progress is to be made in the future then batting and fielding will have to be improved.

SCHOOL SWIMMING GROUP NOTES

As an experiment, in the spring term, keen swimmers were able to miss the customary sports of the term and concentrate on their swimming. Accompanied by the early morning swimming periods and continued games sessions during the Summer term, the groups' standards rose and a strong nucleus of swimmers emerged. Such a central body was structured on Stuart Nicholas, Steve Sheppard, Mark Bruce, Adrian Jarratt, Kai Dwyer, Dave Allen and Tony Crier in the Senior Group and Julian Richards, Nigel Russell, Graham Belgum, Kevin Smith, Paul Smith, Del Coghlan and Mark Watkins in the Juniors.

The high attendance at the morning session - these were volluntary was indicative of the new found enthusiasm especially amongst the 3rd and 4th form.

Swimming is a difficult sport to train at for without proper coaching, pacing up and down in the baths soon becomes tedious. Variety; an essential element characterised our sessions and kept up interest.

I found it remarkable to observe particular team members. Who through their devotion and hard work in the water and gymnasium continually chipped seconds off their times to reach very respectable standards.

These manor achievements on a personal level , I believe served as an-incentive to train, helped maintain, the- interest and involved a healthy competitive spirit.

However, an analysis of the gala results during the season, if we take -a win as success and defeat as failure; does not accurately illustrate the teams capabilities. Many fixtures. were won or lost by a narrow points margin caused at times by faulty starts and turns.

After a pleasing start, a bad patched followed but the victories against the RMA Sandhurst and AAC Arborfield (former Junior Army Champions) enabled us to finish on a high note. A deserved reward for the serious training throughout.

A brief look at the school and match records broken and equalled against Holbrook is a better representation of the groups ability.
