1978 was a year of mixed fortunes for School Athletics. It was app the all round strength of the previous year, start of term that we would not have .and our worst fears were realised when the Open Team lost to Kings Canterbury, St Lawrence College and Simon Langton. However the team surprised and delighted me by winning the Duke of York's Cup against the strongest opposition of is so often the case all depended upon the final relay and although we did not win it, we did enough to ensure victory by two points. My congratulations to the Captain, Martin Skinner and his team. I feel Mike Lambert deserves a special mention for his achievement in winning all his three events. My thanks also to-Bruce and Bob Baker, Barry Sanderson and Ian Jenner for helping out in our time of need.

AS can be seen from the results sheet the younger age groups we-re fairly successful. We retained the Powell Trophy and came second in the South East Kent Championships. This last competition led to 10 boys being selected for the area team in the County Championships, and as a result of which Mike Lambert. Paul Gibson and Andrew Noakes were chosen to represent Kent, in the All England-,Championships, coming,, 19th, 6th and 9th respectively.

The junior House Championship ended in a win for Kitchener. and Wolseley won the Senior Competition. Individual champions in their respective age groups were: First Year, M O'Hara, Second Year, R Turner, Third Year, D O'Hara, Fourth Year, M Geldard, Fifth Year, J Boog-Whiteside. Open and winner of the Victor Ludorum M Lambert.

Only 3 school records were broken throughout the season but often conditions :were unfavourable for record breaking. The Five Star Award Scheme continues to flourish and with the necessary effort and enthusiasm, there is no reason why next season should not be as enjoyable.
