2nd XI HOCKEY

The '78 seasons did not go quite as well as we might have wished although extremely high spirit was gained by all the, players. We started off on a poor note losing 3-2 to Dover College, but nevertheless the inspiration of Andy Marshall, the penetrating runs of 'Petal' Jenner and the delicate touches from Len Wilby promised hope for the future. For our second match we gained the experience of Paul Jones who, with his goal-scoring ability inspired us to a convincing win over Harvey Grammar.

Due to the incessant rain (responsible for the cancellation of many matches and practices) all but one of our matches had to be played on the square. The only grass match being played away to King's, where we went down unluckily by two goals to one.

Dave Allen played consistently well in goal although his penalty saving was never put to the test. Unfortunately our inside left succeeded in rounding Dave to push the ball into his own net, scoring his only goal of the season!

It would be unjust not to mention all the hard work and effort put in my every member of the team which made the season thoroughly enjoyable. On behalf of Andy Marshall, who left before he could put pen to paper, I would like to thank everybody for their support throughout the term. Our thanks must also go to our every present coach Mr Belcher, who so unselfishly gave up many hours of his time to help us through the season.

UNDER 15 HOCKEY 1978

This must go down as a rather uneaven season. 'Flu, and the unpredictable weather, restricted practice games and disposed of the Simon Langton and Brockhill matches; but otherwise we played our games as planned, and King's Canterbury, entered our fixture list for the first time. Another welcome innovation was an Invitation Six-a-side Tournament here, won by Chatham House.

Our side this year showed a high standard of ball control, and combined well, especially on the hard surface of the square, where they have played most of their hockey. On grass, their limitations were shows up: they lack strong hitters, and have not mastered the art of long cross-field passes, which open up the field and split the defence. It was also noticeable that this year we lacked good reserve players.
