This season saw tremendous activity within the whole School and the results have been most encouraging. The standard of play achieved by the 1st XI was high here, the benefits of Indoor hockey during the Autumn Term were very evident. Sadly, appalling weather did not nothing to help the rhythm of the Side and we ended up by playing 6 matches in the last 12 days of the season, which did not help the players to display their best.
The season opened with a 2-2 draw against Kent College. This was a first class performance and the best we have achieved against this traditional Hockey School. Sir Roger Manwood's for the first time for years (3-0).
Harvey G.S. were walloped (6-0). Dover College beaten 4-1 and we lost 2-3 to Chatham House in one of the best games I have seen here. The only school side which out-classed us was Kings who won 5-0 and all credit to them for having a very accomplished team. Of the club games played, the Invitation XI proved too strong, winning 5-1, optimists from Folkestone were Partner lucky, winning 1-0, and the OBA won 2-0 in a poor game.
Penalty-corners again proved a major weakness - no goals came from these and we must get them going, next season. On the other hand, our adapted 4-3-3 formation proved a success, especially in defence. No goals were conceded on the break, as was the case two seasons ago.
Of the players, congratulations are due to Barry Sanderson who again captained the side well and dominated the centre of the field throughout the season, to Bruce Baker in goal who was yet again a tower of strength, to Bob Baker and Angus Ferguson, who filled the full-back roles with skill, and to David Caulfield, our converted centre-forward, who scored a lot of goals his best performance being 4 against Harvey G.S. Sadly his terrible injury may deprive us of his undoubted skills next season. Still there is a nucleus, of this year's side remaining and we hope to be able to build on the foundations laid by this team.
