UNDER 16 XV

This season was the most successful enjoyed by this "year group" in the School in terms of matches won. Their success was due not so much to technical brilliance or flair but more to their cohesiveness and determination - the team's spirit.

The season began badly at Canterbury against a poor King's team, where poor tackling and a lack of fitness brought a heavy defeat.

The side began to improve, as reassured by the defeats of Dover Colt age and Sutton Valence and more significantly, of Colfe's School.

The latter was a new fixture, and the School team did exceptionally well to win against a larger and faster team by dint of superior tackling and a greater determination to succeed. The hearty support from the touchline proved a decisive factor during sustained pressure by the visitors at the end.

The story could not be repeated against Eltham College however, whose heavyweight side rolled inexorably on to a narrow victory.

St Dunstan's are always a difficult team to beat and in adverse conditions at Catford the result hinged on a last minute conversion attempt against the elements by Mike Windle. His success earned another close win.

At Sandwich, a dour encounter against Sir Roger Manwood's was marred by some intimidating play by the home team which could have created some unsavoury reactions. Despite the intense rivalry and tension, by playing a good defensive game ~ one tackle by Paul Grint on a large Manwood's ; forward in full flight being particularly memorable - and by keeping cool and playing sensible rugby we emerged as satisfied victors on the day. This certainly marked an improvement in attitude in the side over previous seasons, and demonstrated the increasing maturity of the team.

Good victories against St Lawrence and Dover College followed to round off an enjoyable and satisfying season. The essence of success throughout was sound defence and determined teamwork, and it would therefore be invidious to single out any player for particular mention. The side was captained by Andy Fyfe and the pack was led and inspired by Ben Noakes.

Thanks are extended to Mr Middlemiss (who was determined to TRY and get us fit) and MR PORTER for their work throughout the season.
