SERVANT OF TWO MASTERS

Take a handfull of capable and enthusiastic actors, an extremeley competent stage staff, a laugh-a-line Italian farce; co-ordinate them under an expert producer of long experience, and lots of practice; and there you have it: success on a plate. I say "on a plate" because the culinary delights involved the fast and moving and, I may say, decidedly well worked meal scene at the end of act one, were as big a hit back stage as with the audience. It was a long time coming, but when Nick Justin as the incorrigible Truffaldino, finally got things together on the meal scene, there was no holding him. But, as I'm sure Nick will verify, no "no man is an island" and the remainder of the cast would have gladdened even Shakespeare's heart. Scintillating performances by Andy Griffee as the senile, venal merchant Pantalone; bu Richard Sandells, in the last of his many fine roles, as Florindo; by Mark Fynn, who risked life and limb with Lombardi, to name but a few, went together to give a fine evenings entertainment. The Junior School were well represented, particularly in the suitably augmented forms of Marc Richards and Chris Bourne.

There were hitches naturally, but despite Tim Huggins' unsporting behaviour in lasting out the final performances in the relative comfort of a hospital bed, the cast managed admirably with a minimum amount of panic.

But for the the abscence of available scores the Dramatic Society would have been playing "Jesus Christ, Superstar." but judging by the success of "The Servant of Two Masters," I, for one, am not complaining.
