ADVENTUROUS TRAINING

The end of the Easter term dawned bright and sunny and as the floor of blazers leaving the school diminished twenty eight Vth and VIth formers finished packing king rucksacks and assembled in khaki on the parade square. This was the 1978 "Adventurous Training" party about to embus for the Dorset Coast and a weeks camping , hiking, canoeing, orienteering and climbing. (all in our holidays as well!) The train journey took 4 1/2 hours with a further ¾ hr lorry journey to East Lulworth and our first camp there; an open fieId on the brow of a hill which w as unfortunately to turn into a quagmire of mud in the not too distant future.

With tents up, latrine dug, the main stove (somewhat resembling an old thrower) -established and rations sorted, a party started to cook the supper. The old hands soon recognised the familiar cry ringing across the field "Bears, one tin between four" and after being fed and watered we settled down to our first night at Camp.

For the first two day the 4 sections did orienteering and canoeing (unfortunately the local, Sherpa advised us against climbing on the wet and therefore dangerous sea cliff at DANCING LEDGE). A large orienteering course was somewhat reduced when the rain washed off the relevant information on the markers, and the canoeing off Swanage Beach passed uneventfully except for Rusty Whitton and Kai Dwyer who tried a little underwater swimming aswell.

On the 24th the whole party walked from Durlestone Head to Lulworth,Cove along the Dorset Coast Path (a Cliff top path affording some very spectacular views).

The same day the was moved close to Sidmouth this time a proper caravan site with showers and toilets……...luxury.

On the 25 th, we walkled from Lulworth to Updey, the '26th from Lyme Regis to the campsite and on the 27th a somewhat reduced group (thanks to blisters) marked from Sidmouth to the Campsite.

On the 28th the party dispersed by train from Honiton at the end of a very tiring and wet, but also enjoyable week.
