Canoeing has not only become a regular feature in the annual CCF Adventurous Training, but is now thriving actively as a club.
During the past two years, three new canoes have been purchased bringing the total number which we have to nine singles and three doubles. This enables us to run a club of twenty individuals but membership is limited at present to the Senior school. However, during the winter terms the first and second forms have an opportunity to learn the basic skills in the swimming baths.
Our activities are mostly restricted to paddling on the river Stour between Canterbury And Sandwich, and in the sea at Kingsdown and Dover Harbour but an important feature of the calendar is the Whitsun half term trip to Camber Sands where we have established a very pleasing relationship with the campsite owner, so much so that they refuse any payment from us. The sea is still cold at Whitsun, but not sufficiently prevented us from surf canoeing, and practising capsize and rolling techniques. Very soon we are hoping to be able to purchase wet-suits and more helmets which will add to the pleasure.
Another regular visit is the annual trip to the Lake District or Snowdonia in. the November half term. Twelve of us had the pleasure of experiencing four-foot waves on Derwentwater this year. Next Easter we shall be on the River Wye, the prelude to another Summer Term of regular paddling.
